If you're preparing your bike for its test then have look the official MOT Testers Manual which will let you know what to check. Remember though, at times it can be the tester's discretion or interpretation that can make a difference between a pass and fail. HTH.

That's a 5 year old version of the manual. Although most of it is still correct, the part about exhaust systems (quite an important bit considering all the aftermarket cans!) was changed in August last year.
The can no longer requires a BS or EEC marking to say that it is road legal. If however it is marked 'NOT FOR ROAD USE', TRACK USE ONLY' or similar words, then that is a fail (depending how friendly your tester is!).
So, if your can has no markings at all, it is not a fail. It can however still be failed if the tester thinks it's to loud compared to the noise which a standard can in average condition would make.
